I’m an expert at Solitaire. The card game, that is, though I play in on my phone. It’s one of my go-to games for when I need to divert myself for a few minutes from whatever I’m working on. Or a lot of minutes. When I’m dragging my feet about coming to work on one of my projects, I set a limit for myself, usually something like, “You get to play until you win a game, or three games total.” I won’t lie, I always feel disappointed when I win the first game.
One of the things that really helps me when I’m sitting down to write is having a friend or two within chat reach. I know, talking with people seems like it would be counterproductive to getting work done, but writing is such solitary work that it helps to feel like I’m not in this all alone.
Or maybe it’s just a mind trick conjured up by a brain that’s fractured by an overload of multitasking. I do know that I really was able to make a lot more progress this week on my COB projects than I have all summer, whilst simultaneously working on a RP thing with a far-off friend. The RP was just for us, but it kept me in front of the computer when I might have otherwise wandered off, and while I was waiting for her to complete her part of the RP, I worked on City of Bridges. So multitasking and diversions do sometimes work in your favor! The trick, I think, is learning how to manage them.
Which I haven’t done perfectly, of course, because all in all it’s been a mixed week, productivity wise. The Barbarian post for City of Bridges went up on Friday, which was a huge accomplishment, given it’s been since April that I completed a new chapter. It clocked in at something like 4800 words, which is immense, and it’s no wonder that it took me so long to wrap my brain around it. The next post, in comparison, will probably be under 2,000 words, and really has required only a little bit of editing to make it ready – one of those instances where my fast draft was a lot better than I remembered it being. I think I’m going to hang on to it for bi-weekly posting, just to stretch out the updates – the one after will probably take a little longer, because there is a sword fight, and then I don’t even have drafts for the posts that will conclude the epic “fantasy prom” event. Hey, it’s not like anyone is breathing down my neck for more, except myself!
